JSBESTECH Daily Turning Process (6): Copper Gourd
In this sixth installment of our daily turning process series, the workpiece is a copper gourd. This project highlights how our machining capabilities handle non-ferrous metals with precision, repeatability and a fine surface finish. It also reflects the way traditional forms can be translated into modern manufacturing practice.
Cultural Significance of the Gourd
Gourds symbolize wealth, health and longevity in China, and they have long been used as decorative objects, containers and ceremonial items. Beyond their symbolic value, some craftsmen hollow out the gourds and turn them into wine pots, combining traditional aesthetics with practical function. This cultural background makes the copper gourd a meaningful piece to produce, as it requires both dimensional accuracy and an appealing surface appearance.
Machining Steps
Master Jiang began by using a lathe to shape the overall profile of the gourd. He then refined the outer edge to achieve the desired contour, paying close attention to the transition between the upper and lower sections. Finally, the workpiece was polished to make its surface even and smooth, removing tool marks and preparing it for inspection.
- Step 1: Lathe shaping of the gourd profile, including the neck and body
- Step 2: Outer edge finishing to control diameter and curvature
- Step 3: Surface polishing for uniformity and a clean appearance
Each step is carried out with careful measurement and process control, so that the finished part meets the required tolerances and visual standards. For copper workpieces in particular, controlling cutting parameters helps avoid deformation and ensures a consistent result across batches.
Equipment Advantages
Our lathes are very rigid and can handle a wide range of materials, from copper and aluminum to stainless steel and engineering plastics. This versatility allows us to support different customer requirements without changing the fundamental process approach. The grinding machine grinds the workpiece very smoothly and makes little noise, ensuring a clean finish and a comfortable working environment.
Applications and Quality Control
Parts such as the copper gourd can be used in decorative hardware, gift items, architectural fittings and custom components. During production, we inspect dimensions, surface condition and overall appearance to confirm that each piece meets the agreed specification. Where required, additional finishing or assembly steps can be added to match specific project needs.
